Intro Training Course

A three-day beginner canyoning course in the Blue Mountains designed to teach you the fundamental skills, techniques, and safety required to enjoy canyoning confidently. Small groups, expert instruction, and hands-on learning make this the perfect starting point for your canyoning journey.

This course is ideal for anyone looking to:

  • Learn canyoning for fun or personal adventure

  • Join a club or develop outdoor skills

  • Build confidence and safety knowledge in canyon environments

You’ll gain hands-on experience in equipment selection, anchor assessment, rope systems, self-rescue, belay types, and group management.

Course Structure

Day 1 – Cliff Environment (Katoomba)

  • Introduction to canyoning gear and equipment selection

  • Rope selection, knot tying, and basic rope craft

  • Establishing safe rope systems and anchors (natural and artificial)

  • Abseiling techniques with descenders (tubular, figure 8, assisted braking devices)

  • Basic ascending techniques and belay methods (self, top, bottom)

Day 2 – Canyon Training

  • Practice skills in a carefully selected canyon based on group ability

  • Complete a canyon under expert supervision

  • Emergency response and group management

  • Planning and packing for a canyon

  • Using retrievable rope systems

Day 3 – Canyon Refinement & Scenarios

  • Continue practicing canyon techniques

  • Workshop emergency scenarios and group management

  • Final supervised canyon descent

  • Course debrief and Q&A

  • Fitness Level: Easy hiking required

  • Duration: 3 days

  • Client-Guide Ratio: 1:4

  • Meeting Time: 08:00 AM

  • Meeting Location: Day 1 – Narrow Neck Lookout; Day 2 – determined by group skill level
