INTRO TO CANYONING
A two day canyoning training course in the Blue Mountains, introducing fundamental canyon skills and techniques.
This canyoning training course is designed for people who want to learn the fundamental skills of canyoning, in a small group with direct coaching from an expert instructor. If you are looking to canyon for fun, join a club, or pursue your own adventures this is the course to set you up for success.
We will cover equipment selection, anchor assessment, self-management, belay types, self-rescue and much more.
Day one begins in Katoomba, at a cliff environment. We will introduce the equipment needed for canyoning, rope selection, knot tying and rope craft. By days one’s end you will understand the fundamentals of establishing foundational rope systems for canyoning and how to do it safely.
Day two will be conducted in a carefully selected canyon, determined by the group’s skill level. We will put into practice the abseiling and canyoning skills learned on day one. These also include planning and packing for a canyon, using a retrievable rope system, group safety, and emergency response.
Previous experience: previous abseiling experience in a recreational setting is recommended, but not required.

INTRO TO CANYONING DAY 1:
Introduction, preparation and gear selection
Establish ropes for abseiling, anchors natural and artificial
Abseil with canyoning descenders (tubular, figure 8, assisted breaking device)
Various belay methods (self, bottom, top)
Vertical mobility: device lock off, basic ascending techniques
INTRO TO CANYONING DAY 2:
Training in a canyon
Complete a canyon under supervision
Emergency response and group management
Conclusion and debrief
