CANYON ROPE RESCUE

Up to two days of training in essential rope rescue skills required for canyoning.

This course is designed for people who want to the learn technical rope rescue skills for canyoning,

The first day teaches critical skills in self-rescue, load lowering, 3:1 hauling, VT Prusik ties for rescue, and problem solving stuck ropes,

A second additional day continues skill development in a canyon environment with improvised techniques and rescue response scenarios.

Prior knowledge and an understanding of the principles of the retrievable rope systems and releasable abseil systems is essential for this course. Please contact us to discuss your suitable for the course if you are unsure.

CANYON ROPE RESCUE DAY 1: VERTICAL MOBILITY, LOWERING, HAULING, VT PRUSIK, STUCK ROPES

  • Introduction, preparation and gear selection and setup

  • Vertical mobility and self-rescue skills, lock offs, knot bypass, ascending

  • Releasable systems and lowering loads

  • 3:1 hauling with a toothed pulley (progress capture device)

  • Valdotain Tresse (VT) Prusik ties (VT, Asymmetric method)

  • What to do if you have a stuck rope?

  • Conclusion and debrief

CANYON ROPE RESCUE DAY 2: CANYON SCENARIOS, EMERGENCY RESPONSE

  • Trip planning, emergency gear and setup

  • Canyon approach, group discussion on risk management

  • Alternative canyon management skills: improvised lowers, meat anchors, improvised belays, drop loops, hauls

  • Emergency response, shelters, group management, hypothermia management
